Fighting Cancer with AIDS – NY Times

They had hoped to see some benefit but had not dared dream of complete, prolonged remissions. Indeed, when Mr. Ludwig began running fevers, the doctors did not realize at first that it was a sign that his T-cells were engaged in a furious battle with his cancer.

This doesn’t fall under our typical range of topics, but I had to share this fascinating article about a recent advance in fighting cancer – using modified T-cells to go back in a fight the cancer. While this was just a trial, the results seem to be inspiring. Of the three patients discussed, 2 had complete remissions, while the third has significant, but not complete remission. Can Cancer be defeated, and by using a modification of the AIDS virus?
