Defunding Public Goods

Under Gov. Rick Perry (R) this year, Texas slashed state funding for the volunteer fire departments that protect most of the state from wildfires like the ones that have recently destroyed more than 700 homes.

Texas cut fire department funding by 75 percent this year

Fire Departments are Public Goods.  What happens when you take public money away from the provision of public goods?  Why is it that so often we find it unnecessary to have such “frivolities” until disaster strikes?  Is there a way to get Americans thinking more proactively? As we are talking about this week, Americans are an individualistic lot, but we are, in the end, a society, a collectivity, don’t we owe it to each other to provide these basics?  Are you okay with that even if it means you might have to pay higher taxes?
