The Squeaky Wheel…

“If I care enough about this issue to complain about it in conversation, then I’d better care enough about it to get in touch with the elected officials who represent me.”

Taking Action Matters | ThinkProgress

Compare the nature of public opinion about gun permits in 2011 here…

With the nature of opinion for those that have either written an elected official or given money to a campaign here…which chart matters?

Matt Yglesias, in this post at Think Progress, uses a nice example of the dissimilarity between public perceptions about gun permits and legislative response to highlight the importance of doing more than just voting to get things done.  The insight to be gained is that it doesn’t really matter what ALL Americans think, just those that are willing to stand up and do something about it, we call this Issue Salience.  When was the last time you participated in politics in some way other than just voting?  Would you consider doing something like contacting your elected officials know that it is actual productive?
